Surgical periodontics

A surgical procedure is often the only solution in the course of a progressive periodontal disease to stop severe consequences of the course of the disease. The most common visible symptom is receding gums. Stopping and reversing this process is important for aesthetical reasons as well as in terms of the sensitivity of the teeth. An exposed neck of a tooth shows notable hot-cold sensitivity.  A natural gum line can be restored by transplantation of local connective tissue or by slightly reshaping the gum line. The gum line can be reshaped by means of minimally invasive surgery, creating a more aesthetic appearance and ensuring that it resumes its original protective function.

Depending on the course of the periodontal disease, bone augmentation may be necessary if bacteria penetrated into the jaw bone causing it to degrade, which means that it no longer can support the teeth sufficiently. There are several methods for bone augmentation which are used depending on the findings.
