Maxillary sinus surgery

A maxillary sinus surgery may be necessary in case of inflammation, ulceration or polyps in the maxillary sinus. The maxillary sinuses are part of the paranasal sinuses. Chronic sinusitis is often the cause of problems with the maxillary sinus. Permanent accumulation and inadequate removal of secretions lead to inflammation. The results are narrowing of the respiratory tract, resulting in the airflow through the nose being very restricted, headaches and impaired olfactory sense. Maxillary sinus infections are first treated with medication. If this does not prove to be successful, after a longer period a maxillary sinus surgery is advised.

The maxillary sinus surgery can be performed under general or local anaesthesia.
