Paediatric prophylaxis
Although they begin to fall out as early as during elementary school age - particularly primary teeth must be protected and specially cared for. They have the important task of holding the position for the permanent teeth. Thus, dental hygiene should begin as early as the first tooth. This includes a healthy, low sugar diet as well as regular brushing. The visit to the paediatric dentist and professional prophylaxis are therefore particularly important to maintain health.
Brushing children’s teeth - How and how often?
Dental hygiene should be practiced as early as the first tooth and is best carried out with a finger cot with nubs (Nenedent). Until the age of 2 once a day.
From the age of 3 on, twice a day, preferably with an ergonomically shaped toothbrush, which small children can grasp with their hands. Alternatively, an electric toothbrush for kids may add some fun to dental hygiene and can facilitate further cleaning by the parents. So-called dental floss sticks, which simplify the use of dental floss, can be used to clean the areas between the teeth and must be used for closely spaced teeth.
Fluoride - an important element for the teeth!
Fluoride shields the tooth enamel from harmful acids caused by caries bacteria. Increased fluoride content in saliva can even repair minor caries damages in the tooth enamel. This protection is very important, especially in the early years.
This is how you can protect the teeth of your child with fluoride:
+ During the first year of life you should give your child vitamin D + fluoride tablets (rachitis prophylaxis + 125 mg fluoride).
+ Between the age of 1 and 5 it is recommended using toothpaste with a fluoride content of 500 ppm.
+ With the breakthrough of the first permanent tooth, you can use toothpaste with a fluoride content of 1,250 ppm.
+ Starting at the age of 6 an Elmex-gel should be used once a week.
What can the dentist and the prophylaxis specialist do?
+ Educate you about oral hygiene and a healthy diet
+ Professionally clean those teeth that cannot be reached with a toothbrush
+ Identify caries risks not visible to the naked eye
+ Early detection of malocclusions
+ Deep fluoridation of teeth, to form a long-term protection against harmful acids
+ Seal molar teeth to protect fissures from caries
Other Services
+ Saliva test (determination of caries risk)
+ Nutrition plan
+ Sealing of teeth
+ Deep fluoridation
+ Prophylaxis for infants (dental hygiene is playfully introduced to the child and parents are educated on child-friendly dental hygiene)
The right choice for your child
We offer different services that you can individually select for the dental health of your child.
Here you can find a summary of our prophylaxis selection for children:
+ Prophylaxis education 1–2 times a year without dental cleaning (from 6 years of age)
+ Dental cleaning (co-payment required) including saliva test, deep fluoridation and nutrition plan if necessary (from 4 years of age)
+ Zahnpiratenclub (tooth pirate club) combo offer (co-payment required), 2 x annual cleaning including teeth cleaning, fluoride treatment, saliva test and nutrition plan if necessary (from 4 years of age).
Who pays for the prophylaxis treatments?
Despite the enormous importance of preventive medical examinations – especially right from the beginning – the associated costs are not always fully covered by private health insurance companies and statutory health insurance providers do not cover any of the costs for children under the age of 6. But we believe that the personal contribution is an important and worthwhile investment in the dental health of your child.
The described oral hygiene products are available at our paediatric practice. Please do not hesitate to approach us, so we can present them to you or arrange individual products for you.
