Retention

Finally, the moment that most patients have been dreaming of for a long time has arrived. The orthodontic treatment is completed. The brace or the aligners have fulfilled their duty. The dental arch is harmonised and from now on the new smile can be shown off with pride. Those who think that the orthodontic treatment is now finalised will be disappointed, because now another very important phase, the retention phase, begins.

During the retention period it is imperative to stop the teeth from assuming their original positioning. There are many types of retainers which may be used to stabilise the positioning of the teeth, depending on the prior treatment. Besides removable retainers, fixed retainers, such as the Lingual retainer are often used as well.

Lingual retainer
The lingual retainer is a flexible wire which is attached to the inner surface of the teeth, stabilising the positioning of the teeth. Lingual retainers must be worn for several years, but the minimalistic, customised design of the lingual retainer ensures that it is perceived as barely disturbing in the mouth. The lingual retainer is used especially after more complicated orthodontic treatments.
